Shamir 2017

in Entertainment & LifeStyle

On November 3rd, Shamir will drop his 3rd studio album. Entitled Revelations, the record will be the 22-year-old artist’s first with the Father/Daughter label. The drop is coming just 7 months after Shamir’s second album, Hope, which was self-released on Soundcloud in April of this year. For every record purchased, Shamir will donate a dollar to the Mental Health Association of PA. Shamir holds an entirely unique presence in the music industry, and his nonbinary gender identity and androgynous voice have made him a staple in the LGBTQ+ music scene. He’s released one single off the new album so far,…

From LA To NYC: DragCon With Holly 2017

in Blog/Entertainment & LifeStyle/Weekly

Five months ago, during his Keynote speech at the end of an incredible two days of RuPaul’s DragCon in Los Angeles, RuPaul instructed us to pack up our lashes and tuck tape, as they would be flying to New York City for the first ever East Coast DragCon. After an overwhelming response resulted in an early date change, this past weekend it finally happened, and of course, I flew across the country to be there. After L.A. DragCon completely exceeded all my expectations, the idea of an East Coast Con was exciting, but felt a journey into the unknown. L.A.…

Outfest 2017: Why It Matters

in Blog/Entertainment/Entertainment & LifeStyle/Weekly

Outfest is one of the biggest queer events in the United States, located in one of the biggest film hubs in the world. Since its beginning in 1979, the festival has grown into a powerful institution in LGBTQ+ life as well as in mainstream film. Outfest’s slogan says everything about its role in our culture: “Our Stories Have Power.” In a world filled with stories that normalize the erasure and manipulation of queer narratives, movies and TV created by queer people can act as powerful antidotes. Stories are the conduits through which we understand the world; lessons that teach us…

That Gay Romance on Dear White People

in Blog/Entertainment & LifeStyle/Weekly

The first season of Dear White People, released on Netflix at the end of April, has received stellar reviews. It tackles inter- and intra- racial conflict from a variety of perspectives, telling a series of interconnecting stories that embrace the complexity of racial issues on University campuses in the United States. It’s relevant and worth watching for so many reasons–Not least of which being the kiss shared by Lionel (played by DeRon Horton) and Silvio (played by D.J. Blickenstaff) in the final episode. Who could have predicted that it would happen, or that it was just what we all…

Final Fantasy XV: Rethinking Gender Balance and Thematic Elements,

in Blog/Entertainment/Weekly news

I have the pleasure of being a Generation-X gamer whose first system was an NES and have owned every Nintendo and Sony console since I started gaming for my eighth birthday not with Super Mario Bros., but with the original Final Fantasy. The movies and cartoons and breakfast cereal that I grew up with aren’t a source of nostalgic enjoyment, but plain old enjoyment–if I never grew out of something, I never missed it, and neither did my friends. My life has been pretty boring and uneventful, even my coming out was fairly nonchalant when one day I started…

in Entertainment/Weekly/Weekly news

It’s hard not to love the ‘80s. It’s the decade that gave us door-knocker earrings, colorful pumps, pink lipstick, Cotler “parachute” pants, scrunchie hair ties, banana clips and ribbon barrettes… What’s not to like? We also remember the amazing music that stands the test of time. Madonna’s Like A Virgin and Open Your Heart, Bon Jovi’s Runaway, and Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Want To Have Fun remain in heavy rotation on radio stations across the nation. The lasting legacy of the ‘80s remains even in today’s pop culture. The movies of the ‘80s were no exception. This decade saw the release of countless love…

The Death of George Michael and Long-Term Memory

in Entertainment/Weekly news

At the age of 22, I was proud to have been drunk out of my mind more times than any human liver should be able to physically tolerate even after fifty years of enjoying the demon in the bottle. At the age of 23 and the time of this writing, I have had more sex partners than as many people on Friday night lineup waiting to order at Pink’s Hot Dogs in La Brea. At this same tender age, I have also had the chance to live in a foreign country to study theater arts and enjoy both the…
