Tila Tequila, Neo-Nazism, and Queer Women in Social Media

“Men Act and Women Appear.”

John Berger published a book in 1972 called Ways of Seeing, where he talks about, you guessed it, perceptions in art. In the book, he analyzes how art reflects the larger social consciousness in which men hold power through action. On the other side, he theorizes that women hold power through appearance.

Tila Tequila is a classic example of this idea of women’s limited ability to hold power through appearance. She has been “appearing” ever since the beginning of her career – as a model, reality show star, and social media presence . As much as she has capitalized on her ability to appear, she has created the opportunity for others to profit as well. Her image, even her Nazi photos, have served as a large amount of capital for studios and social media.

At the same time, she seems to take the brunt of the criticism for this “appearing” and even her desire to “appear” and hold power. Many have criticized her, harshly, for her less-clothed, sexy persona and her desire to stay within the public view. That is pretty interesting, especially as compared to Donald Trump’s experience of winning the U.S. Presidency at least in part due to his own fame as a reality TV star (and highly publicized statements and stunts).
