9. 2016 Rio Summer Olympics
The 2016 Summer Olympics were groundbreaking in many ways – and not just as fodder for some really hilarious and awesome internet memes. Singaporean Joseph Schooling grew up to best Michael Phelps in a historic win, Simone Manuel became the first black woman to swim to Olympic gold in an individual event, and David Katoatau danced his way into people’s hearts to raise awareness about climate change and its effects in his native Kiribati.
It also set the record for LGBT and female participation, and had a refugee team whose presence stimulated awareness for the experiences and struggles of refugees across nations.
