This month, the efforts of Native American tribes and other environmental and social justice activists at the Standing Rock Reservation were rewarded when the Army Corps of Engineers declared that no permit would be issued for the Dakota Access Pipeline. The protest itself has had a turbulent history, with protesters experiencing freezing temperatures, experiencing discrimination and being refused services by businesses in the local area, and being hit with tear gas, water cannons, and concussion grenades.
Though the fight is not over, this was a major victory for the water protectors and land defenders.
